About Us

Shanty Productions

Shanty Productions is an independent film production company committed to producing drama that speaks to a diverse audience. Our first production is a full text version of William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, a four hundred year old stage play adapted for the screen to reflect multicultural Britain today.

Rakie Ayola - Co-Founder

Rakie is a graduate and Fellow of The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. She is equally at home on stage or screen. Leading roles at the Royal National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, Shakespeare’s Globe and the West End have been complimented by a wide range of roles on television and film, including three years on Holby City, Dr Who, Under Milk Wood, Shetland (BBC), Vera (ITV), Black Mirror, No Offence (Channel 4). Her film credits include The I Inside, Sahara, Dredd, Now Is Good, and the 2018 Netflix hit Been So Long. 

Following a year in the West End playing Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in 2018, Rakie is currently appearing alongside Rhys Ifans at The Royal Court in On Bear Ridge. 

In 2020 she can be seen in the BBC adaptation of Malorie Blackman's Noughts & Crosses.

Adam Smethurst - Co-Founder

Adam has been a professional actor for over twenty five years since graduating from Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts having first gained a degree from the University of Manchester. He has worked on many of the leading stages across the country and internationally, appearing in numerous Shakespeare productions including The Merchant of Venice, Hamlet, Twelfth Night, Much Ado About Nothing, The Tempest, Richard III and A Midsummer Night's Dream. His television credits include Hustle, Silent Witness, Robin Hood, Miss Marple and Lewis. After completing an MA in Screenwriting at the University of the Arts, London, Adam began directing corporate films. He made his feature debut adapting and directing Twelfth Night for Shanty Productions.

Before becoming an actor Adam qualified as a teacher with a PGCE and has taught in numerous and diverse settings throughout his career.
